Thanks to a cleaners' strike, the disease ridden metro now looks and smells like a 15th century slum and the centre is enveloped by a choking cloud of smog for much of the year.
However, what Madrid does have is the 'Museum of Wax'- the only place on the planet that recognises the genius of Iker Casillas, this column's King of Spain for 2007.
The Museum of Wax is what would happen if Madame Tussauds employed sculptors who had only the vaguest notion of what their subjects looked like and who used their feet to create their oeuvres.
In November, the museum decided to show off its latest exhibit - a model of Iker Casillas, roaring in triumph. When the moment of the grand unveiling came, the specially invited Iker could not disguise his horror at the monstrosity that had been created.
Rather than being an ecstatic figure, bellowing a triumphant cry of glory, the new Casillas resembled the Nazis who had their faces melted off at the end of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'.
"That's not Iker!" cried one terrified child. The lack of attention the Museum of Wax paid to getting his likeness even slightly right simply reflects the lack of attention Iker is paid in the wider world of football.
Without Iker Casillas, the simple fact is that Real Madrid would not have won the league title in the summer of 2007 and they would not be seven points clear at the top of the table going into 2008.
Clearly, the astonishing strike rate of 47 goals in 67 matches of Ruud Van Nistelrooy has more than a little to do with the club's recent revival, but it was the Dutchman who received the player of the year accolades in Spain and it was the Dutchman who made the short-lists of the recent global glut of end of year prizes.
All Iker was rewarded with was the terrifying three dimensional vision of what he would look like during a famine.
On the surface, Casillas claims to be unbothered by the lack of attention for his near perfect performances, but a comment in 'El Mundo' from October may suggest otherwise.
"The Ballon d'Or? I'm only a goalkeeper," joked the Spanish super-stopper.
Casillas is only the goalkeeper who captains his country and ensured that they remained undefeated in competitive matches in 2007.
Casillas is only the goalkeeper who saved his team-mates' skins as they suffered early season maulings by Getafe and Valladolid.
Casillas is only the goalkeeper who kept his side in the Champions League with an astonishing last minute save from Olympiakos' Darko Kovacevic - a save that prompted the Serbian striker to comment "We're talking about the best keeper in the world."
Even as recently as last weekend's Barcelona v Real dust up, Iker proved himself to be the best in the business, with a superb double save to keep Ronaldinho out and the most perfect of slides to steal the ball from under the feet of Samuel Eto'o.
Last season, Iker Casillas was the most shot at goalkeeper in the Spanish Primera. Little has changed this time round, with the stopper being forced into action more than anyone else yet again.
"I like to be kept busy," admits Casillas cheerfully.
And it's a good thing, too. With the current campaign about to reach its halfway point, Casillas has conceded just fourteen league goals, but has made the most number of saves with 71 and the second highest number of intercepted crosses with 64.
Real Madrid's number one, now dubbed 'Saint Iker' in the Spanish press, is so integral to the future of the club that it forced him to deny stories that Tottenham had been in contact with an offer as soon as Juande Ramos had clapped eyes on Paul Robinson.
Casillas looks set to follow in the footballing footsteps of many great goalkeepers who were never recognised by their peers. The only number one to have ever received France Football's Ballon d'Or honour was Lev Yashin, back in 1963.

Goodbye 2007...!!!
i've been MIA for quite some time
that is because i was in ipoh for the past 1 week
but now im back
2007....it's gone and im happy it is
so many things happen in 2007
i member how i started the yr wit my industrial trainin in penang
so many things happened
i made new frens, got close to some, argued wit some
livin away from home is like hell
i cant even see my precious angel
learned a lot durin my trainin
i guess i matured a bit
had my 2nd trainin in KL
live away from home also
the plc i trained in was ok
trainin had change me somehow
despite bein depress, cryin, workin my ass off..it an experience i will never forget
wat else happened in 2007.....
i made lots of new frens and got close to some
some just lost touch
some showed their true colors
some did some confessions
fought wit some
some are just bein jerks
some are just bein liars
some are just bein asses
eventho most of the frens part are negative
i still have a few great frens and u noe who u r
i found out bout lots of stuff in 2007
let it out or keepin it inside still doesnt change anythin
i find dat im more depress n emo in 2007 den any other yr
but there are some ppl who brightens me up
i noe i changed a lot throughout the yr
in a good or bad way..its for u to judge
i don care anyway...
besides gettin close wit some frens
the other highlight of 2007 for me was
real madrid winnin their 30th la liga title
i adore football and i love real madrid
so it means a lot to me mainly because of iker casillas
i love him for almost 6 yrs now
don even noe y i do..i just do
i don care wat ppl tink
its my choice to love who i wan
u cant chose who i should or should not love
hate me for lovin him or hate him coz i love him is up to u
i don care...
cant believe im goin to be 20 dis yr
but still im so childish but not as much as before
hope 2008 will b a nice yr for me
hope its fill wit happiness, love, success
i wont expect my dream to come true
dreams are meant sleepin after all
but i just hope 2008 will b way better den 2007

my precious looked so gorgeous..as usual
it was bloody cold in madrid..

but he looked damn cute..lol

so yday took cough med durin real's half time break
thank God i took it durin the break n not at the start

exams-out, college-out, its party time.....!!!
after the finance paper, i wen pyramid wit pauline, kc and adrian
jr suppose to meet us there later
told him to meet up in j.co
den we reach thr pauline decided to eat carl's jr
so wen n c whether open or not and it was so we wen thr n eat
pauline and i shared
den sumthin happen funny happen wit pauline and my food and adrian's
adrian loves to tell the story so refer to him bout it..lol
den we din tell jr to meet in carl's jr
we let him find us in j.co
in the end he called one of us and met us in carl's jr
lol..we are mean but dat is just the startin of it..lol
i asked jr to help me refill my ice lemon tea coz he sit at the side n im in the middle
so while he was refillin it, adrian ask me " i wonder wat the fries will taste like if i dip it into my strawberry drink..."
so i wen n threw 1 fries inside..lol
then jr was not bak yet so i threw 1 in his and close the lid bak
lol....i noe im mean but it is funny
den wen jr came bak he ask me "why u put pineapple in ur ice lemon tea"
OMG..................pauline and i looked at each other and burst out laughin like mad
it was lemon slices in my ice lemon tea
and he thot it was pineapple
omg...jr jr
den adrian imitated the way jr eat..like a cat
damn funny man
laugh so so much in carl's jr
we sat thr and talk talk talk but 2 hours plus
den wen n walk walk
den pauline had to go
so i walk walk wit kc, adrian and jr
those guys walk bloody fast man
shit dem
den wen arcade to meet up wit renelle coz she needs a lift bak 4m kc
kc and adrian played some shootin game
kc was bloody emo man
esp wen his character died
den we head bak to coll for term 6 final dinner
den renelle a.k.a chia peng followed us
adrian, renelle and me sat at the bak
jr sat in front wit kc
den we talk bout sumthin and say the name chia peng
den jr ask "who is chia peng"
n we laugh...again
chia peng is renelle who is sittin rite bhind him
i have no comment on jr anymore...lol
the dinner was ok
drank a yucky merlot wine
taste like shit, crap, pathetic
den as usual my face turned red
so was kc
now gona hav hols till 2nd week of jan
gonna miss my frens and all the laughters

studied law like shit
